Google bought YouTube in 2006 with hopes of “creating new models for advertising on the Internet”. Although, YouTube generates a lot of traffic, it hasn’t been a good investment for Google. According to a report by Credit Suisse, Google will lose approximately $470 million in 2009 alone because the cost of content acquisition, bandwidth and storage for YouTube far exceeds the revenue earned from advertising.

Youtube’s growing popularity only means bigger losses for Google. And then there is Hulu, which is considered the main competitor of Youtube. Hulu is owned by NBC and features Fox and NBC shows. It has gained the upper hand with its sleek design and appeal to advertisers by providing access to big production shows and movies. Youtube on the other hand doesn’t place advertisement on amateur videos, which make up majority of the content on Youtube.

To compete with Hulu, YouTube is planning on featuring more professionally produced videos for advertisement placement. In fact, Youtube has made agreements with Sony, Lions Gate, MGM, and others to showcase TV episodes and full-length movies in the near future.

Mobile Marketing Mushrooming

With over 30 million devices in the market, mobile is the new medium for marketing. Despite the economic downturn, it is predicted that mobile marketing will be on the rise. The US market for mobile advertising will grow by 36%, rising from $169 million in 2008 to $229 million during 2009 according to Magna.

In Q1 of 2009 alone, Apple sold 4.4 million iPhones. Currently, there are 65,000 apps in the App Store (the number has more than doubled since January). The average iPhone user has over 20 applications downloaded on their device. Advertisers are crafty about embedding and incorporating advertisement into these applications. Although, skeptics believed free iPhone apps wouldn’t generate ad revenue, they are in fact doing quietwell because they appeal to a wider audience. With more smartphones being introduced to the market, mobile advertising is a growing field.

In Europe, mobile marketing is much more widespread. A simple advantage they have over the North American system is that there is a single mobile air interface called GSM, whereas in North America, there are three competing air interfaces, which limit transfer of wireless data. The introduction of cross-network, five-digit shortcodes for consumer textback response has been a boost to the industry.

With new developments on both continents, marketers keen in adopting the new mobile channel are wise to do so as soon as possible. Sanford Bernstein’s research analyst Jeff Lindsay predicts that the worldwide mobile-advertising market will expand from $700 million in 2008 to $7.2 billion by 2012.

In 2005, Google started sending out invitations for users to open e-mail accounts with Gmail beta. Gmail offered an innovative way of searching your inbox, sorting your messages and allowing much more storage than any other e-mail service. Four years later, Google is finally out of Beta and still pushing the envelope. Here are some of my favorite Gmail Labs features that are worth enabling:

* Google Calendar in Gmail: A mini version of your calendar to keep track of your upcoming appointments.
* Forgotten Attachment Detector: Prevent an embarrassing mistake. This tool checks if your message refers to an attachment and alerts you in case you forgot to attach it.
* Undo Send: Everyone deserves a second chance.
* Offline Access: In a plane, a tunnel or anywhere in between where you don’t have internet service, you can access your e-mail, read and write messages.
